Río Claro is one of those places that feel like another country: a river of crystal-clear water flowing over a bed of white marble, between rock walls covered in rainforest. It sits in the Magdalena Medio region of Antioquia, about 3 hours from Medellín, and it’s the ideal destination if you’re looking for nature, adventure and water.
In this guide we explain what the Río Claro Canyon Nature Reserve (Reserva Natural Cañón del Río Claro) is, what you can do there, the best time to go, how to get there from Medellín and what to bring.
What is the Río Claro Canyon?
The Río Claro is born in the mountains of eastern Antioquia and, before flowing into the Magdalena River, cuts through a canyon of limestone and marble. Over thousands of years the water has slowly dissolved the stone and created a karst landscape: polished walls, emerald-green pools, and caves and grottoes with stalactites.
The reserve is at kilometer 152 of the Medellín–Bogotá highway, within the municipalities of San Luis and Puerto Triunfo. To protect the area, Cornare, the environmental authority for eastern Antioquia, declared the “Bosques, mármoles y pantágoras” Regional Integrated Management District in 2019, covering about 15,905 hectares.

Things to do in Río Claro
Rafting down the river
This is the most popular activity. The Río Claro has class I and II rapids, meaning low difficulty, so you don’t need any previous experience. The route runs between marble walls and past pools where you can swim. We cover it in detail in our guide Río Claro rafting: what to expect and what to bring.
Caving
Inside the canyon there are caves you can explore with a helmet and a flashlight, walking and sometimes swimming among rock formations. Some are home to oilbirds (guácharos), nocturnal birds that find their way in the dark using sound, like bats.
River trekking
This means walking along the river, hopping between rocks and swimming in the pools. It’s a fun way to reach corners of the canyon that the trail doesn’t get to.
Hiking and wildlife watching
The trails run through tropical rainforest. With luck you’ll see monkeys such as the gray titi, a species found only in Colombia, as well as birds, frogs and butterflies.

Weather and best time to go
Río Claro has a warm, humid climate, with an average temperature of around 26 °C. It rains for much of the year, but the rainiest seasons are April to May and September to October. During those months the river can rise and turn murky, and some activities are suspended for safety.
The best times to go are December to January and July to August, when the water is usually clearer. If you go on a weekday, you’ll find fewer people.

Is Río Claro for everyone?
The activities are soft adventure and require no experience, but you do need a basic level of fitness: you walk on slippery rocks, swim in pools, and the caves have narrow passages. On our tour, the adventure activities are for people between 10 and 50 years old.
Life jackets and helmets are always used. If you can’t swim, have an injury or are pregnant, let your advisor know before booking so you can choose the right plan.
How to get there from Medellín

- By bus: buses to Doradal, Puerto Triunfo or Bogotá leave from the Terminal del Norte (North Bus Terminal) and pass the reserve entrance. Ask the driver to drop you off at kilometer 152.
- By car: it’s about 152 kilometers along the Medellín–Bogotá highway, roughly a 3-hour drive. It’s a mountain road with heavy truck traffic.

What to bring and rules
